In protein synthesis the 2 strands of DNA separate under the influence of the enzyme RNA polymerase. Messenger RNA (abbreviated mRNA) is synthesised complementary to one of the strands, using base-pairing identical to that in DNA except that uracil (a base found only in RNA) pairs to adenine. When the mRNA strand is complete it migrates out of the nucleus to the cytoplasm ribosomes.
